Senate Food Safety Bill
Who is the government protecting?
Spurred on by recalls of contaminated foods, Congress has been working on legislation to reform the FDA’s food safety systems. The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act is reported to…
• Improve our capacity to prevent food safety problems
• Improve our capacity to detect and respond to food-borne illness outbreaks
• Enhance U.S. food defense capabilities
• Increase FDA resources
It sounds like this bill is designed to protect the consumer. However, some groups are concerned with the vagueness of many of the controls, the favoritism it shows to large farm companies, the lack of protection for organic farms, the massive power given to the FDA, and references to “harmonization” with international regulations that would be contrary to our heath freedoms … to name a few issues.
The House version passed. In September the focus switched to the Senate version S. 510. Here are some resources you can check out as you determine how you feel about this matter.
